POSSIBLE TORNADO THREATS
Collier County residents need to be aware of the possibility for tornadoes associated with Hurricane Irma. Tropical storms and hurricanes often spawn tornadoes as they come ashore. Residents are encouraged to stay tuned to local media or NOAA Weather Radios for alerts of possible tornado warnings in the area.
Collier County’s NOAA Weather Radio frequency is 162.525 MHz (or, preset “6”). The Specific Area Message Encoded (SAME) code for Collier County is 012021.
Prior to a tornado warning being issued identify a safe place to take shelter, such as an interior room with no windows (bathrooms are often a good refuge). Person living in mobile homes or older manufactured homes should seek shelter on the lowest floor of a sturdy nearby building (such as a club house) or a community storm shelter. If you are caught outside with the tornado approaching, like flat in a ditch or depression and cover your head with your hands. Be aware of flying debris. Flying debris from tornadoes causes most fatalities and injuries.
