Palm River Bridge Preliminary Design Plans Public Information Meeting 5 – 7 p.m.
Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2019
The Collier County Growth Management Department’s Transportation Engineering Division is holding a public information meeting regarding preliminary design plans to replace the bridge on Palm River Boulevard over the Palm River Canal from 5 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 15, at LaPlaya Golf Club (Clubhouse), 333 Palm River Blvd., Naples, Florida 34110. Residents, visitors, business representatives and property owners may review displays and talk one-on-one with the design team, which includes county staff and the county’s design consultant, Jacobs Engineering Group, Inc., during the two-hour open format meeting. There will not be a formal presentation.
This two-lane bridge, built in 1960, is nearing the end of its intended life span and needs replacement. The existing bridge, 60-feet long and 33-feet wide, is proposed to be replaced with a new structure, 70-feet long and 48-feet wide to meet current Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) Design and Safety Standards.
Final design plans for the new two-lane bridge are expected to be completed by the end of this year and are planned to include 11-foot travel lanes with six-foot sidewalks. Construction is anticipated to occur in fiscal years 2020 through 2021.
During preliminary engineering, the county evaluated various alternatives for the removal and replacement of the existing Palm River Canal Bridge. Due to the type, age and condition of the existing bridge, as well as the limited available right-of-way to remove the old bridge and construct new improvements, replacement options are limited. To safely construct the new bridge, the county has determined that a temporary closure of Palm River Boulevard between Palm View Drive and Viking Way will be required for about six- to eight-months. During this time, residents and visitors will be required to utilize a posted detour. The proposed detour route will be on display at the public meeting for review and comment. The overall project construction is anticipated to be 12- to 14-months.
Two or more members of the Board of County Commissioners (BCC) may be present and may participate at this public information meeting. The subject matter of this meeting may be an item for discussion and action at future meetings of the BCC.
