Stephen 'Bear" Terstegge wins the Senior Volunteer Award from the Leadership Coalition on Aging
Stephen ‘Bear’ Terstegge has volunteered with the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) since 2011. Bear, who is a Veteran himself, is a volunteer driver in our Veteran Services Division. According to a 2013 report of the National Conference of State Legislatures, Florida is only 1 of the 15 states in the US that help Military Veterans access transportation. Bear has logged over 1,400 hours and 36,700 miles transporting Veteran’s to their VA medical appointments located in Cape Coral and St. Petersburg.
Bear not only volunteers his time driving Veterans, but is an active member of the RSVP program. To spotlight the impact of national service and thank those who serve, Bear has represented our program for the past two years at the Mayors Day of Recognition for National Service where he helped accept a Proclamation from the City of Naples to engage citizens, improve lives and strengthen the community by encouraging residents to find ways to give back.
Bear is a dependable volunteer with an amazing attitude. Heather Bilodeau, Veteran Services Operation Coordinator calls Bear her “go-to” volunteer when she is in a bind or has an urgent situation. He always has a smile on his face. Often times, clients will call the office after their ride to compliment the job that Bear did. Many clients schedule their medical appointments around Bear’s volunteer schedule! Bear truly enjoys the time he spends with his fellow Veterans, sharing stories, telling jokes, and just chatting about life.
