School Recycling

Everyone is looking for new and better ways to bring information into the classroom. Our Recycling Coordinators can bring Waste Reduction and Recycling Education into your classroom. Our  presentations includes an exercise related to local recycling do's and don'ts, and a short film (13 minutes) on recycling and the processes used to create end products from recycled materials. In addition, we can bring samples of products created from the recycled materials for all to see. The presentation takes approximately thirty to forty minutes for a classroom of twenty-five students, and we are available to do multiple presentations at your school. We are happy to provide presentations to higher and lower grade levels.

Our field trip to the Collier County Landfill offers a chance to see a working landfill up close and personal from the highest point in Collier County. The volume of garbage being created in Collier County takes on a new meaning when you are standing on a hill of garbage 100 feet high and looking at the working face of an active landfill. To add more excitement to your landfill tour we will also stop by the new Collier County Renewable Energy Facility.  The plant opened in the spring of 2011 is converting landfill gas emitted from decomposing garbage  into electricity.   It is estimated the new plant will produce enough electricity to power more than 2,200 households annually.  The landfill is located just east of Collier Boulevard near the I-75 overpass. Tours can be arranged at any time during the year and take approximately 60 minutes once you reach the landfill. Transportation to the Collier County Landfill must be provided by the school.

Our programs can be worked into the Sunshine State Standards for grades 3-5: Science and Social Studies. For more information or to book a program or a tour contact Solid Waste Management Department at 239-252-2508 or by email
