The Planning AreasThe Community Planning Section is responsible for the study and update of several Collier County area land use plans. Over the course of the next several years, Collier County will embark on the study of four areas in the eastern portion of the county.
The four areas of restudy, which are grounded in the County’s Growth Management Plan, are:
It’s an ambitious project initiated by the Collier County Board of County Commissioners, and it is an important one. Currently, about 100,000 people live east of Collier Boulevard, but that number is expected to grow by an additional 300,000 to 400,000 before build-out.
These plans were first derived with tremendous public involvement. These plans are good, even award winning. But after more than 10 years, it was time to adjust the plans to account for changing conditions, and foster public involvement so that the process is transparent and the outcomes reflect public values. The Growth Management Oversight Committee, made up of residents within each of the planning areas, guided public outreach efforts.
The goal of each restudy is to improve sustainability and economic vitality, consistent with the Board of County Commissioners’ goals and the community’s vision; have coordination between the four plans; update our best practices to protect environmental resources such as large connected natural areas and water resources; and promote smart growth, so that future generations inherit a community that is robust. .
